Featured Classic Cocktail – Blood and Sand

Blood & Sand

Blood and Sand is one of the few classic cocktails that includes scotch and it is certainly one of Blood Sand Pic 2my favorites. This drink was named for Rudolph Valentino‘s 1922 bullfighter movie Blood and Sand. The red juice of the blood orange in the drink helped link it with the film. The recipe first appeared in the 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book.

At first glance the ingredients seem like an odd mix. However, once shaken vigorously and strained into a cocktail glass the ingredients meld together in perfect harmony. The sweet notes of both the Cherry Liqueur and Dolin Rouge counter the heat from the Scotch and the orange juice lends to a lighter mouth-feel. Once you experience one you understand why this classic is still being shaken up all over the globe.

1 oz Dewar’s 12yr

1 oz Orange Juice

¾ oz Dolin Rouge

¾ oz Cherry Liqueur

Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker, fill it with ice and shake vigorously. Then, double strain the cocktail into a chilled coupe and enjoy.
